When is the application deadline, and when do classes start?
We accept applications on a rolling basis and typically start classes in January, March, May, August, and October.
How many students are typically in a class?
Our class sizes typically range from 2-12 students. Our largest classes are usually those that begin in August.
How many hours and days per week is the program?
All students are considered full-time students and are contracted to attend 32 hours per week. We are open for students Monday 9:00-1:30, and Tuesday through Friday 9:00-4:30.
Is Carolina College of Hair Design open year-round?
Yes. Carolina College of Hair Design is open year-round. We are closed on the following holidays: Memorial Day weekend, Independence Day week, Labor Day weekend, Thanksgiving, a two-week winter break for Christmas and New Year’s, and a week-long spring break. Teacher workdays are scheduled throughout the year.
What are the admissions requirements?
We require that you be at least 17 years of age and have an official transcript, diploma, or GED from an accredited high school. You will be required to submit a copy of your driver’s license or state-issued ID. In addition, we look for applicants who are passionate and dedicated to a career in cosmetology. How long does the Cosmetology program typically take?
With consistent attendance, our 1,500-hour Cosmetology program is designed to be completed in 52 weeks. Upon completion of the program, you will be completely prepared to sit for the state licensing exams.
Can I take my Cosmetology courses online?
Carolina College of Hair Design does not offer online instruction. We currently only offer on-campus instruction.
What specific skills will I learn?
Our curriculum covers everything you need to know to begin a successful career in cosmetology. This includes instruction on skills like cutting, coloring, and styling hair; to facials, makeup, and manicuring; to vital information on infection control, anatomy, chemistry, professional image, and career planning. How much does the Cosmetology program cost?
Our application fee is $50. The total tuition cost is $19,485. Federal financial aid is available for students who qualify. (Learn more here.) We supply all the books and tools you need while you are here.
What is financial aid?
Financial aid is funding that helps eligible students cover the cost of their education. This can include grants, federal student loans, and other assistance programs for qualifying students. Financial aid is designed to make pursuing your education more accessible by reducing out-of-pocket costs while you’re in school.
What types of financial aid are available?
Financial aid is available for those who qualify. We accept the Federal Pell Grant, Direct Subsidized Loan, and Direct Unsubsidized Loan.
How do I know if I am eligible for financial aid?
Eligibility for financial aid is determined by the U.S. Department of Education and is based on several factors, including financial need, enrollment status, and citizenship or residency requirements. To find out if you qualify, you’ll need to complete the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA). Our admissions team is available to help you understand the process and answer any questions along the way.
What kinds of job opportunities are available after graduation?
After completing the program and meeting licensure requirements set forth by the North Carolina Board of Cosmetic Art Examiners, graduates are prepared for a wide range of careers in the beauty industry. Job opportunities may include working in salons or spas, becoming a nail technician or makeup artist, working in skincare, becoming a freelance artist, working in education, being a product representative, or even owning your own business. The beauty industry offers flexibility, creativity, and many paths for professional growth and long-term career potential.
After completing the program, what kind of job placement assistance or career guidance do you offer to help graduates get started?
We are committed to supporting our students not only during their training, but long after graduation as they begin and grow their careers. Throughout the program, students have access to a variety of job opportunities posted on our in-school bulletin board. We also regularly host industry professionals who visit to teach classes, share insights, and create valuable networking opportunities—often leading to apprenticeships or employment connections. In addition, local salon owners frequently reach out to us in search of talented students and graduates. We take care to connect individuals with opportunities that align with their skills, goals, and desired work environment. Our support doesn’t end at graduation. What is the difference between cosmetology school and barber school?
Cosmetology school (1,500 hours in North Carolina) provides training in hair, skincare, nails, and makeup—offering a broad education in the beauty industry. Barber school (1,528 hours plus a 12-month apprenticeship in North Carolina) focuses primarily on men’s haircutting, clipper work, shaving, styling, and facial hair grooming. Both lead to professional licensure, but cosmetology offers a wider range of services and career options.
What are students expected to wear?
The North Carolina State Board requires each school to enforce a dress code. Our dress code is as follows: All students are required to wear a solid black, ironed uniform of scrubs and closed-toe shoes. A name tag (provided by the Institution) must be worn at all times. If this name tag is lost or broken, a replacement must be purchased for $9. During the colder weather, a black long-sleeve shirt may be worn under the uniform top. No sweaters or jackets may be worn while in uniform. Smocks of any color may be worn while on the clinic floor.
